Bad $7.59 Taking up the mantle of Andy Warhol’s usual filmic collaborator Paul Morrissey, Jed Johnson offers up some laid back Warholian cinematic mayhem with the hysterically laconic BAD. Hazel Aikins runs an electrolysis center out of her home in Queens, New York and on the side runs a ring of smart-mouthed and sexy street girls whom she hires out as professional killers to those unwilling to do their own dirty deeds. When she unwillingly takes in her first male charge, L.T. (Perry King), Hazel’s well established balance is upturned. As the various ladies carry out their gruesome tasks (killing a dog, maiming a gas station attendant) Johnson trains the camera as much on the superbly bizarre mannerisms and gestures of the actors as on their actual crimes, creating a vastly amusing if slightly disturbing cast of characters. When L.T. finally gets his assignment, to kill an unwanted autistic child, he becomes paralyzed by memories of his own abused youth. Hazel, constantly annoyed by her untrustworthy girls, her electrolysis clients, her useless daughter-in-law and whiny grandson and the unruly cop who she pays protection to, finally comes unglued in a bizarre and outrageous climax befitting Warhol’s legacy. Bad Company $15.16 BAD COMPANY (MAUVAISES FREQUENTATIONS) is a tough-as-nails coming of age story from director Jean-Pierre Ameris. Delphine (Maud Forget) is a pretty brunette with a sweet, shy, cooperative disposition. When she returns to high school after summer vacation, a new girl named Olivia (Lou Doillon) has joined her class. Olivia is tall and sexy with long dreadlocks and a bold, bohemian fashion sense. The girls are instantly drawn to each other and Olivia begins taking Delphine to parties to meet guys. Much more experienced than wide-eyed Delphine, Olivia has had multiple sexual partners and encourages Delphine to find out what it’s all about. Delphine instantly falls in love with Laurent (Robinson Stévenin) who is ragged, emotionally charged, and needy. He tries to manipulate Delphine and constantly tests her limits, but she stands her ground and commits herself to loving him unconditionally. Once he realizes this, and sees the power he has over her, he coerces Delphine–and Olivia–into prostituting themselves in order to buy him a plane ticket to Jamaica. What follows is an intense, emotional, sickening journey made entirely compelling by Forget’s breathtaking performance and piercingly sincere blue eyes. Underneath its nasty, but amusing, teen nightmare veneer, BAD COMPANY is a beautiful story about a lasting friendship between two girls. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Bad Santa $15.16 Billy Bob Thornton is terrific as Willie T. Stokes, a lowlife department-store Santa in Terry Zwigoff’s outrageous comedic follow-up to his offbeat hit GHOST WORLD. Every year, Stokes takes a job as Santa in a different place in order to rob the store he’s working in. The diminutive Tony Cox plays his horny sidekick, Marcus, the real mastermind, who is even more foulmouthed than Stokes. Brett Kelly is Thurman Merman, an eight-year-old who desperately needs to believe in the real Santa Claus–and just might have a good enough heart to change Stokes’s evil ways. Or maybe not. And Lauren Graham plays Sue, a young sexpot who wants to get a different kind of gift from Santa. Providing excellent comic relief in this black comedy is John Ritter, in his last film role, as the mousy mall manager, and Bernie Mac as Gin, the mall security guard who suspects something is not right. Be warned–BAD SANTA is not a family holiday movie. It is lewd, crude, and very funny, but it is most definitely not for children. Joel and Ethan Coen, the brothers behind such quirky hits as RAISING ARIZONA and BARTON FINK, are the executive producers who came up with the idea in the first place, influenced by the likes of THE BAD NEWS BEARS and SOUTH PARK.
