Why can’t flash drives or SD cards replace CD’s & DVD’s like they replace VHS & cassette tapes. ?
Before CD’s & DVD’s disc, we used cassette tapes for music & VHS tapes for movies and videos. What I’m saying is why can’t the world start replacing “disc” all together with SD cards & flash drives as storage for movies and music and start sellin them in stores. INSTEAD OF AN ALBUM OR MOVIE BEING ON A CD OR DVD “DISC”, WHY CAN’T IT CAN BE SOLD ON AN SD CARD OR FLASH DRIVE?
To play them you can have a usb player wih a usb port or SD card insert on it or on your boombox, in your car, etc. The usb player or SD player would look like a DVD player but much smaller and on a dvd player instead of were you insert the disc in the front, you put your flash drive in or you put the SD card in and you play the movie or album!!!
Well, it would need to be ROM (read-only) format rather than flash, as flash media can easily be wiped.
Other than that, however, what you suggest is perfectly feasible. In a sense it already partially exists, as there are boomboxes in stores with SD card slots on them. However you can’t actually buy albums in this format and it is intended to complement, rather than replace, the CD player.
There are two main barriers at present:
Manufacturing costs. It would be more expensive to produce movies and albums on solid state media than on DVD and CD. This may change in the future.
Installed base. CD has been around since 1982, DVD since 1996. There are hundreds of millions of DVD and CD players in active use, and a HUGE library of CD and DVD titles available. You cannot simply wipe this out overnight and replace everything with memory cards.
A more likely scenario is that everyone moves over to non physical media, i.e. internet downloads. This is already largely the case for music and could happen in the future with movies too.
